Graduation Ball 2016

Queen Elizabeth College | Graduation Ball 2016 | Semper Sosores Cato San Frontiers Thursday 28 July 2016 6:00pm – 10:30pm Royal Gardens, Victor Hugo Road, Beau Bassin   A TOUCH OF ROYALTY Non SOLUM  ♥♥♥ E ruditioni ♥♥♥  Sed VITAE It was 5:30pm and the sun started to sink lower in the sky, the light of day draining away, and giving way to the velvety dark of night. The air was mildly damp and cool leaving goose bumps on our arms from the winter evening of the Mauritian July. The green shrubbery now looked almost black, silhouetted, colors muted, as if they had been drained away by an invisible hand- as if the artists' palette had been changed. The wind howled lightly as the students arrive through the gates, hustling and bustling up the yellow-lights lined staircases. Graduation Ball is one of the biggest balls of the year and perhaps your final chance to celebrate with all your friends from the last seven years. The Graduation Ball ...

11 Perks to the Big Sister- Little Brother Equation

At the beginning of your happy, jolly journey on Earth as a little h-oo-man, it’s just you. You get all your parents’ attention, sharing and another little h-oo-man that would snuggle himself in your seat at the dining table remain two alien concepts. Then, before you know it, you’re a big sister to a baby brother. You swell with the importance of your new responsibility – until you realise that it’s a life-long commitment. My brother and I are six and half years apart in age. Naturally, there were those few years that involved constant fighting and him blaming everything on me and somehow never getting in trouble while I took all the heat. But what are the Perks of being a Big Sister to a Little Brother?  1. You get to dress him up in female clothing For the first couple of years, before he is impregnated with any preconceived societal ideas of gender identity, you get to have him wear your Mom's bras and have him apply bright red lipstick. Heck, now that I...

First Q&A

1. Can you tell me some of your strengths that really helped you in blogging? I personally feel it has been my ability to perceive things differently. We are not in India or the United States where teenager writings are given some kind of importance at least from their age peers. We are in Mauritius, and it is tremendously hard to jerk the silent mass that we have to come out and read a content unless it is noteworthy.  I   feel the different approach is what attracts many.  2. How would you describe your blogging style? Uhm. I'm not sure that I kept a particular blogging style. The point of Our Alter Ego is exactly to present a plethora of different selves of our own self and hence various styles. But recently a friend made me realise that I may very well have a common styling in all of my articles; that was when guest postings started to come up and comparisons could be made. So apparently, depth, complexity and wisdom is my style.  3. What do you...

My First Ideological Challenge

Seated in front of our old television set I was perplexed as to how Mam (maternal grandmother) could believe in the mystic creation of the Rama Setu that bridged Sri Lanka and Southern India through the invocation of Indian divinities. It was more valid to me that the big boulders floated on the ocean by the principle of density and because of the civil engineering marvel of an ancient civilization. I was six and timid, but in my eyes was a glint marking my first instance of challenging a normative belief.  Some five years elapsed and I found myself at the birthday party of a cousin. It was just like any other family dinner: everyone talking politics until blasphemous Tata (maternal grandfather) mentioned some irrational rituals conducted by a priest Mam had called for a house prayer. That, of course, irritated my grandmother but titillated me to pronounce the following: “Those priests work only for money, they don’t even explain us anything. Tata is speaking true, why...

My UCAS Personal Statement

Picture clicked by Navish Ghugroo Good Morning everyone! So today I decided to share my UCAS Personal Statement. I applied to 5 British Universities:  The University of Nottingham,  University of Southampton,  University of Bristol,  University of East Anglia (UEA), and the University of Glasgow where I applied for either Social Psychology, Social Policy and Sociology and Neuroscience.  I received unconditional admissions to all of them. I won't be making it to any of them, though, firstly because of I haven't received any plausible scholarships from the UK and secondly because I finally decided to have a slight change in the subject course I'm choosing. I have no idea how much a personal statement contributes to UK University Applications Process, but still, there you go: "The Indian Mythology story-Mahabharata- spun my life around the social dynamics axis at the early age of seven. I have always had a keen interest in how easily society and people ...
