Hello everyone,
So yesterday I watched +Kapoor and Sons, and I just thought of reviewing it. I think the movie was really gripping and entertaining. It's a movie I could watch all over again. As another review places it, Kapoor and Sons begs to be heard, not just watched.
Quick Comparison
I loved it better than Alia Bhatt's +Shaandar for sure. But I also think it was better than +Pyaar Ka Punchnama (2011) or +Shaadi Ki Side Effects. It definitely played a higher sonata than +Dil Dhadakne Do in terms of familial complexities that tended to be more individual-based than society-oriented here.
Storyline and Direction
It has a pretty up-to-point direction by Shakun Batra who chooses not to venture with cinematography, keeping the heart of the movie alive: the drama.
The storyline is astounding. It pushes you to think how far family 'issues' can go. While one revelation proved to be a total surprise packet, an incident that followed proved to be predictable although you wish it didn't happen. However, the meticulous writing behind the script did seem purposefully planned to fire away drama at you. It does so in a very subtle way, only visible to story writers themselves.
This Alia-Sid-Fawad starer, like Dil Dhadakne Do in 2015, could hands down be the most engaging family drama of the year. There is a high emotional quotient that brings out the problems of a dysfunctional family. The movie is a total surprise packet since neither the trailer or any interview or promotional events disclose what really is the centre storyline. This is not solely about Alia Bhatt being the bone of contention between the two brothers and neither it is solely about Rishi Kapoor wanting to see his entire family together in a photo before he dies. You simply have to watch the movie and find out what it is about.
Content and Setting
The story is surprisingly post-modernist. It broaches topics that would have been viewed not with rose-tinted spectacles just a few years back. I commend the initiative to present those topics in a way that doesn’t make it seem taboo. These are simply add-ons to the storyline, removing the controversy quotient from the movie.
Acting
When you meet Rishi Kapoor’s character, you immediately realize his love for theatrics, just like real life Rishi Kapoor. Ratna Pathak (Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai) as a tired housewife is a treat to watch. The emotions float on her face yet you can see the real person behind it. She, along with Fawad Khan, is the pick of the actors. Fawad Khan is like a dormant volcano, simmering from the inside. After a while, you expect him to go for controlled eruption, but he surprises you by going all out. His capabilities as an actor are on a full display in Kapoor & Sons. Alia was effortless and flawless as always. Alia Bhatt is that piece of cheese that makes the sandwich lustworthy. Sidharth Malhotra has also understood the required nuances as he pulls off his part nicely. You can see his maturity flourishing as an actor. Fawad, Alia and Sidharth have a lovable chemistry which will make you sit and notice, but from an objective distance.
All on All
Like Tarun Adarsh places it, the script is “watertight,” the storytelling “remarkable” and the editing “crisp.” The movie keeps springing little surprises all the way through, so much so that at times it is hard to believe that this has emerged from the typical Dharma Productions/ Karan Johar stable. The movie has your eyes brimming a bit with tears. Kapoor and Sons is family drama at its best!
For the want of a better term, Kapoor & Sons is an emotional roller coaster. It’s a tear-jerker for sure, but also features the intricacies of a middle-class life.
No dark secrets here, but the shock value is definitely there. You’ll love it for being spontaneous, precise, fast-paced and well...lovable. A fantastic family drama after a long time.
