These holidays were phenomenal in the sense that it was loaded with activities. Sure, it was hectic and sleep-depriving and definitely didn't allow me to blog on a daily basis, or catch up with my favourite soaps and TV shows but it sure allowed me to display a lot of qualities I was trying to experience.
Episode One: Campus Abroad Fair
To start off, I started with volunteering for an Educational Fair where I worked with +EU Business School. I must say it was an incredibly rich experience, particularly because being on the other side of the desk gives you an edge in terms of information and power. I learnt so may things about the international tertiary education world that I would never have had otherwise, learnt tonnes on universities, their financing, their flexibility, their interdisciplinary nature of curriculum, their students' life and so much more. It was a big eye-opener and gave me a lot of insight as to what I want to do later on.
Sure, I met with a lot of tuition friends and school friends who had come to volunteer as well, but also interacted with several local and foreign students, both future postgrads and undergrads seekers or simply high school students.
I particularly caught how many undergrads despite having pursued courses such as Hospitality or Software Engineering wanted to pursue their postgrad in Management and Leadership and that definitely made a lot of sense to me and organised my mind about how I wanted to path out my career options. There were Russians, Germans, Indians and Malaysians who have settled in Mauritius for some years now who came over to plan their own kids' education and it was great talking to them.
All on all, it was a two-days experience that thoroughly won me, especially because the university representative was warm and dynamic, myself having a personal affinity for vivacious folks and of course because of the positive response I was getting for my marketing and communications skills apparently. I met with this young cousin pair who thought I was much older, probably already pursuing my tertiary studies and were stunned when they learnt that I just finished high school. One of them counselled me to think well about wanting to get into the Social Sciences again and thought I would be great in Law and Management or the Communication Sector. Well.
Another high school-goer I met stayed glued in front of me wanting to know how I managed speaking Creole, French and English at the same time. It's just a habit I have. Thank god I didn't add some Hindi too right there. Other than that, I had a great time enlightening people on some things and even dropped my contact details to one of my own girls from school in case they needed anything else. It sure is different that she didn't contact so far, but I guess it's the festive season.
To be Continued.
